The
Songwriters
Wayne Bickerton & Tony Waddington were born and grew up
together in Liverpool in the 1960’s. They spent most of
their teenage years playing in bands during the
legendary “Merseybeat” era and as songwriters, first
tasted success in the 60’s when artists including the
Tom Jones and the Flirtations recorded their songs.
In
1973 they came up with the concept and idea for a rock
‘n’ roll musical and out of this project the Rubettes
were created. In 1974 they scored a Worldwide No 1 hit
with their song Sugar Baby Love and from this they went
on to become one of the most successful songwriting
partnerships, of the 70’s and 80’s. When the Rubettes
went on to have a string of international hits with
their songs: Tonight, Juke Box Jive, I Can Do It,
Foe-Dee-Oh-Dee etc, their songwriting talents were truly
recognised and they were awarded the coveted Ivor
Novello award for Songwriters of the Year. They went on
to form State Records / State Music in 1975 and in
addition to the Rubettes, had more success with Mac &
Katie Kisoon, Delegation etc.
Unfortunately Wayne and Tony no longer write songs
together but their outstanding songwriting partnership
has earned them a place in rock ‘n’ roll history. These
days Wayne still runs State Music amongst other
musical activities and Tony spends most of his time
writing music for films and television.
